Fishing Tenkara, in search of Princess Misurina

Text — Valerio Canè

On the trail of the legend, we will seek to appease the whims of Misurina, daughter of King Sorapiss, enchanted by the mirror of the Crystal Fairy.

Meeting Point: Parking area along the SP 49 of Misurina, about 1 km from the entrance to the village of Misurina (BL).

The name Misurina is a contraction of the expression meso ai rin, which in the local dialect means in the midst of the streams.

It is precisely among the silvery and transparent streams of this magnificent mountainous area that we will search for healthy wild Fario trout. We will first follow the pristine, watery paths of the Ansiei stream, where it originates, and then along the cerulean banks of Rio Bianco, the White River.

From the starting point, we will follow the fishing trail, which lacks specific signage, that runs alongside the peaceful, crystal-clear meanders of the Ansiei, just emerging from the spring.

We will ascend its short course until we reach the village of Misurina, in a setting of stunning beauty. A grassy acrocoro with some peat bog areas surrounded by splendid larch forests. And protected by the rocky arabesques of the Cadini di Misurina on one side and the spectacular ranges of the Cristallo on the other.

After about 1 km, we will reach the village of Misurina, the pearl of Cadore, located on the southern shores of the beautiful lake of the same name.

This first segment offers unforgettable Tenkara fishing spots.

We will enter the convenient mule track that stretches along the eastern banks of the body of water, faithfully following its course.

After a peaceful and dreamy half-hour walk, we will arrive at the northern offshoots in the area called Paludete, named for its peat bog and pasture appearance. From there, we will take the section of the Sentiero Italia trail that, following the road, will shortly lead us to the shores of the picturesque Lago Antorno, a privileged mirror reflecting the Dolomite cathedrals of the Cadini di Misurina.

In an increasingly pleasant environment, we will take the convenient trail marker 108, which first skirts the enchanting alpine pasture of Malga Rin Bianco. For then later descends gently toward the catchment area of the homonymous valley. Here we will find ourselves among magnificent meadows and coniferous thickets.

After about 500 meters, we will take the right on the variant 108, which stays mostly at elevation, high above the catchment area. And extends into the magnificent forest until it intersects with the catchment area of the Arghena Valley. There, we will take a good trail to the left that descends toward the underlying bed of the Rin Bianco, right at the entrance of the enchanting Costa dei Larici.

Just a few steps and we will be on the banks of the silvery stream, which we will faithfully ascend along the comfortable trail marker 108 to return towards Misurina. This segment, about 1.5 km long, constitutes a new series of magnificent spots. Once again at the shores of Lake Antorno, it’s just a few steps that separate us from the cars left at Misurina.
